Freight damaged Tek 2465B
« on: May 27, 2019, 01:09:42 am »
Hi,

Australia Post have damaged a 2465B I just purchased, as you can see from the photo the intensity pot is very bent (won't turn), the focus pot is bent (still turns) and the front panel assembly is cracked down the side and around the intensity pot.

The scope powers on OK.

It was insured but who knows what will happen there.

I'm just gathering info, are the pots easy enough to source and are they soldered or wired to the PCB?

Has anyone out there got a front panel assembly in good condition?

Any general advice?

Thanks for looking.

Cheers
Richard

What do want to happen? If you send it out for repair, it’s going to cost more than buying another one (at least in the US). That would put me into a “this scope is free, how can I make it work?” mindset, and I’d probably try to find a cosmetically good “for parts” scope if I couldn’t live with it broken as-is.

Thanks sokoloff.

My plan to repair it myself (if I have the skills).

Desolder, straighten or replace the two pots, trying to bend the pots back seems like a bad idea, put another front panel assembly (ebay has a couple) on there.

The beauty of old test equipment like this is it was generally built to be serviced with information available.

Go get quotes from a service center to get the insurance matter settled to your satisfaction. That will likely be the most aggravating part of the ordeal.

Good luck!

The seller must make a claim to the shipping / carrier company ... if you say  parts obsolete it may help to get a full refund and keep your item ...

Had this problem with an hp sig gen, the rackmount handles where damaged and the front panel was bent and the power switch was broken, i did got a full refund and kept the sig gen

Carefully un-bent the panel, removed the rackmount handles (dont need them), got a new powerswitch,  works very well up to this day

good luck

I have one that had those pots slightly bent and I was able to straighten them and they work fine now.  If you don't succeed at this, I'd recommend looking at QService--they have your panel and probably the pots (you'll have to look them up by part number).

As others have said here, you may end up with a free unit.  I wouldn't bother getting estimates or trying to determined repair cost at this point---just say it got broken and let them deal with it.  I have a fair amount of free or super-discounted test equipment that I ended up with because the items arrived damaged or not working.  Once that's done, you'll enjoy fixing stuff a lot more!
A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

First thing I would do is to take the front panel off and how badly it is damaged.  Bent shaft may be just a part of bigger problem.  Don't blindly try to bend it back as it might snap.  (it happened to me)   Make a good assessment of damages and then let's talk what you can do.

Professional repair is usually out of question.  Here in US, labor rate is about 100 dollars an hour.

As source of parts, something that will fit exactly is hard to find.  But, non-function units are cheap.  So you might want to consider buying junker for parts.  I have several non-functioning scopes for parts.  If you find out something is broken and beyond repair, send me a PM.  I'll be glad to share them with you.

By the way, pots are  usually soldered to a small PCB and PCB is mounted to the front panel.  Not difficult to replace.  Taking front panel off may be more of pain.  I usually don't bother with insurance.  I usually negotiate with the seller and ask for a partial refund.  It works to advantage of both as shipping stuff back and forth costs more money.

Good luck and let me know if you need parts.
