I am attending to repair my son’s desktop motherboard.  He shorted the board while he was trying to tighten some mounting screws on the motherboard while the computer was powered up.  The screwdriver slipped and touched some components on the underside of the board.  The CPU may be dead as well as he tried installing it in a neighbours computer and the CPU LED was blinking but the computer would not boot.

I am a beginner when it comes to electronics repair and am watching videos to learn.  I found a short on the motherboard and traced it to the CPU section of the board.  I used a thermal camera to see if anything was heating up but only a 100 ohm was getting hot. I managed to find 2 shorted MOSFETS that are located around the CPU.  They are marked as 36308 NP2L 19.  There are other MOSFETS that are marked as 36308 NP2P1C.  I would like to buy both in case I need spares.

However, I cannot find any information online that has the same part number(s).  I contacted DigiKey to see if they could help. Unfortunately they could not verify a replacement part and said that the reference numbers on the MOSFETS are probably proprietary.

Does anyone know what I could use a replacement part?  I’d really like to fix the board for my son and for myself as well as it would be a fix on a complex board.

Hi Steve, some photos might be helpful identifying the components, a close-up of the MOSFET and an overview of the affected area.
However, soldering on a PC mainboard is not a beginners task, the PCB is multilayer and SMD power MOSFETs are difficult to replace.
You might need a hot air station, maybe a PCB preheater and a capable soldering iron.

Thank you for the reply.  I have removed the mosfets with a hot air station. After removing both, the short to ground (using diode mode, + to gnd.) disappeared. I have attached photos of the board with the mosfets and a capacitor removed.  I removed the cap first so it wouldn’t explode from the hot air. Also, I put some tape over theCPU slot for protection.

Appears you‘re not the beginner you claimed to be :-)

Search term was. „Mosfet 36308“
If there are several MOSFETs of the same type in one circuit or even parallel, I would replace them with original parts, equivalent replacement only for standalone circuit.

Thank you Inse! Can I use this mosfet to replace both types? Since they have different ID’s underneath the 36308 I assumed that they were different (N channel and P channel??).

Actually I am a beginner.  I am decent when working with tools (woodworking, mechanical, etc.), but my electronic theory is very limited.  I learned what I know from watching YouTube videos.  My oldest son, now 13, is very interested in electronics, so I had to learn what I could and then teach him (or repair what he breaks or attempts to repair LOL).  I am still very much a novice.  I have been lucky enough to find used tools locally on Kijiji and Marketplace for reasonable prices. Some were new and greatly discounted.
