Grabbers for HP1630 and other analysers/scopes
« on: February 09, 2020, 09:00:56 am »
A few months ago CDI1977 posted interesting information regarding making up pod connectors for a 1630:

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/repair/making-adapters-for-hp-1630-series-logic-analysers/msg2479512/#msg2479512

However as a slightly more general question, can anybody say with any confidence whether the round pin connector used for grabbers by most manufacturers is de-facto standardised, and if so suggest a good source of grabbers and connectors?

The pin appears to me to be around 0.7 mm. A 1mm pin is much too big for the receptacle, a 0.65 mm round pin intended to be used with a breadboard is a bit slack. I'm not experimenting with DuPont etc. square pins since I don't want to wreck the receptacle's plating.

Most cheap grabbers sold for Saleae etc. kit are either wire-terminated or have DuPont pins bodged onto them with varying degrees of professionalism https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/One-Lot-mini-grabber-IC-test-clip-jumpers-w-200mm-F-F-M-F-ribbon-wires-pins/261473278604?hash=item3ce1059a8c:g:L6EAAOxy9X5TaHyd .

There's a few people selling genuine Tek and HP grabbers, but an alternative appears to be Hantek (clones?) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18pcs-Hantek-IC-jumper-Oscilloscope-grabber-probe-hook-test-clip-HT321-SMD-mini/273531581267?hash=item3fafc0b353:g:OJcAAOSwE9Bb1s8f .

There's a few people selling generic grabbers https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Grabber-SMD-IC-Test-Hook-Clip-Jumper-Probe-Test-Lead-Kit-for-Logic-Analyzer/164030948248?hash=item263101a398:g:BLkAAOSwE4heI-du and the fact that some of the connectors shown in the photos are DuPont give us some idea of the pin sizes (but less about clearance for insulation).

Any thought on compatibility and quality would be appreciated. I've got a 1630 to use for cases where I need something much wider than a Saleae etc., but it's short of one pod connector and has no grabbers at all.

25 thou female crimps fit Tek grabbers perfectly.
Stamped ones are the cheapest and I think I got mine from Digikey but don't remember the brand or pt#.

25 thou being 0.635 mm if my maths is correct, so it looks as though we're converging.

A/F of DuPont-style pin/receptacle housing should of course be 0.1" (2.54 mm, but I measure 2.6), O/D of heatshrink around the HP tips measures about the same.

So I think there's a reasonable chance that the cheap generic grabbers would be OK, otherwise there appears to be a fair degree of standardisation.

Thanks for that. I anticipate ordering up a few different typed of grabber over the next few days and will report back for the record.

Hantek grabbers turn out to have blades formed to a C cross-section rather than pins, diameter (if a complete circle) would be of the order of 1mm.

Cleqee grabbers supplied by https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/cleqee appear to be a comfortable fit, pins are nicely circular and gold plated so shouldn't scratch the inside of the receptacles. £9 for a box of ten.

I've had other probes etc. branded Cleqee which are well-finished and appear to be good value, although I can't really comment on the fidelity of things like scope probes since I have a limited amount of quality kit to test them against.

I used the Dupont female connector. I was leaning towards buying E-Z Hook HKM series grabbers, made in USA. They use a 0.025 inch square pin.
Ended up buying used HP grabbers off e-bay, they also use the C cross section. The combination seems to work but I have had some flaky connections. The orientation of the of the receptacle onto the pin does seem to have a preference.

The original round female connectors could be from Amphenol/TRW mil spec connectors.

The Hantek grabbers were (much) too big for the HP receptacles (obviously this might vary depending on the HP model, I've got a 1630G). Anything with sharp corners risks damaging the inside of the receptacles, which is why I avoided square pins.
