GW Instek MSO-2204EA Backlight Bleed - Solution request.
« on: September 17, 2024, 06:35:36 pm »

I own an  MSO-2204EA  oscilloscope that wasn't used for about 6 months.  Upon powering it up, it was immediately noticed that there is significant 'backlight bleed' on the right side of the screen.  Not knowing how the screen is constructed and fastened to the front panel, it appears something has warped or some adhesive bond has failed.  The question is whether anyone else has seen this issue with their scope.   If so, is there any advice in regards to gaining access to the screen and repairing this issue?

Thanks - Jim

If you could provide a photo, it would be easier for us to see the issue.

My first thought was maybe the LCD is loose?
Hehe, spooked my friends with an exploding electrolytic capacitor the other day 😁.

Here is a photo showing the bleed on the right side of the screen.  There is no bleed on the left side of screen.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks.

To me it vaguely resembles something peeling off of the display; Is it the polarizer? If is it, you can use some tape to hold it down, or potentially use some glue, though glue may be more tricky and may or may not alter the light from the LCD.

You may be right.  I was hoping someone has been inside the scope showing how it is assembled.  I guess the only way to know is to tear into and hope that I don't do any damage.  I'll try to document my adventure and post my results.
Thanks

You may be able to find the info that you are after in there

Is the protective film still on the screen? TFT displays always have a protective film and many manufacturers leave it up to the user to remove it.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

IMHO either don't bother with it, or order a new display. Should be some off the shelf display that is likely available on aliexpress. If you decide to take the display apart, be ready it may be destroyed in the process. At least ensure that you can buy a replacement before doing anything with it.

I've purchased the scope new about 5 yrs ago and removed the film upon unpacking.
Thanks

Yes, I guess I will simply leave it alone unless it gets so bad as to become unusable.  More of a nuisance at the moment.  If I ever decide to tear into the unit, I'll document my findings.  Take care-
Thanks.
