How to totally misunderstand the word "classified". Way to go!

Please don't drink coffee during the video - the sound effects are revolting.

Sooooo… your first complaint is that they aren’t adding more info than what’s in the user manual, even though their user manual provides FAR more info than most companies’ user manuals, and more than many companies’ repair manuals.

Second complaint is that they don’t provide component-level troubleshooting and repair guidance. I’d like to see this too, but I don’t think one can reasonably interpret right-to-repair law as requiring this.

Hakko explicitly says that they provide you with the same repair documentation provided to their own technicians. So this means they don’t let their technicians do component-level repairs, which is standard industry practice and has been for a long, long time. (Whether we like that or not.) I don’t think you could reasonably argue that you are entitled to more documentation than their own technicians are.

Third complaint is the repeated mention of insulation testing. Ummm… that’s not an indication of a design flaw, it’s simple, sound advice that I’m sure their lawyers made sure they included.

And yeah, they didn’t say anything about classified material, in the sense of confidential material. They were simply stating that sidebars fell into one of several categories, namely warnings, cautions, and notes, and defining what each means. Classification ≠ confidentiality.

Overall, from the start to the end, the video makes you sound like an unreasonable crank, and the few valid points you do make get lost in the “grandpa yelling ‘get off my lawn!’” noise.

If anyone thinks Hakko sucks when it comes to service information, try dealing with JBC....

People around here know to stay off my lawn! I like to yell at the clouds also!! LOL.

Please review the right to repair law.
https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB244

(2) “Documentation” means any electronic or appliance product manual, diagram, reporting output, service code description, schematic, or similar information that is provided by a manufacturer to an authorized repair provider, or that is for use by the manufacturer if the manufacturer does not have any authorized repair providers, for purposes of effecting the services of diagnosis, maintenance, or repair of the electronic or appliance product.

(1) (A) “Authorized repair provider” means an individual or business that is unaffiliated with a manufacturer and that has an arrangement with the manufacturer, for a definite or indefinite period, under which the manufacturer grants to the individual or business a license to use a trade name, service mark, or other proprietary identifier to offer diagnostic, maintenance, or repair services for electronic or appliance products under the name of the manufacturer or an arrangement with the manufacturer to offer diagnostic, maintenance, or repair services for electronic or appliance products on behalf of the manufacturer.

(B) A manufacturer that offers diagnostic, maintenance, or repair services for the manufacturer’s electronic or appliance products is considered an authorized repair provider with respect to the electronic or appliance products if the manufacturer does not have an arrangement described in subparagraph (A) with an unaffiliated individual or business.

I believe I have Chris Stuber (On Audio) saying they do board level repair and have schematics and firmware for their use no time right now to sort thru the recordings.

This e-mail here shows their intent to not comply.

Also the section they are trying to use exempt themselves in the Business and Professions Code - BPC. Pertains to ATV's, Farm Equipment, Machinery. a Heavy debated during the legislative sessions I watched them all.

(j) (1) “Equipment” means all-terrain vehicles and other machinery, equipment, implements, or attachments used for, or in connection with, any of the following purposes:
(A) Lawn, garden, golf course, landscaping, or grounds maintenance.
(B) Planting, cultivating, irrigating, harvesting, and producing agricultural or forestry products.
(C) Raising, feeding, or tending to, or harvesting products from, livestock and any other activity in connection with those activities.
(D) Industrial, construction, maintenance, mining, or utility activities or applications, including, but not limited to, material handling equipment.

I interpret the law’s wording as meaning that a manufacturer has to provide the same documentation as they provide their own service technicians and to authorized technicians for the purposes of repairs, but not internal documentation that isn’t provided for the purposes of repairs. (E.G. engineering documentation.)

If Hakko is giving its own technicians additional documentation like schematics and firmware to do component-level repairs, but withholding that from others, then they’d clearly be in violation of the law. If their own technicians perform component-level repairs but do so without special documentation, that might be OK.

It seems inconceivable to me that Hakko technicians would do component level repair. It's just too expensive time-wise. Surely they will just swap out the circuit board. No need for a schematic.
