HAMEG 205-2 worth fixing?
« on: October 18, 2021, 07:56:17 am »
Hi, I have this Hameg 205-2 that had a really rough ride (corners bumped, rear plastic shattered).
When I tried powering it on, it made cracking noises and I immediately switched it off.

It's got the manual and schematics, I could hi-res scan them for those interested.

My question is: is it worth fixing at all?
I don't have the need for it.

..not worth fixing.
But keep it for spare parts - especially the mechanical things (knobs, Axle Shaft Coupler etc.)

Fixing a 20MHz old scope is time wasting.
Buying a 30MHz with readout is 360RMB = 435HKD.

BTW, having a service manual does not imply you
have the ability to fix it.  All techs can be layoff or
anyone can be a skillful tech, otherwise. :-DD

See photo. Even at this cheap price, with good appearance, noone wants to buy. :palm:

For repair purpose,  at least 60MHz for crystal oscillation check to avoid -3dB distortion.

I had one of those about 25 years ago. If you can fix it easily, it is a keeper - I found it really nice to operate. No wonder the old HAMEG instruments still sell for quite some money.
But: I wouldn't invest serious money (maybe 20-30 EUR max), you can buy more capable ones easily for 150 EUR or even less.

And keep in mind, this has high voltage parts in it, be very careful.

Thanks.
I'll pass then, haven't got the time.

If someone around Cardiff want it, drop me a message and I'll happily give it away for parts or repair.

Bonjour Romain

Very fine to see you note, I have had a Hameg 103 scope for years and worked to fix it. it cost me EU5, had a retrace blanking issue. The PCB arrangement and high voltages make these hard to service in general.

The quality is good, typical of 1980s German design.

I could use your scope to fix it up or at least swap some common parts as the panels are similar on the series.

I am in Paris but have friends in the UK who may be able to meet you and take it on my behalf.

I shall PM to you as well.

Bon Soiree,

Jon

Ouch, that's an unfortunate outcome.

Whether it is worth it or even feasible to fix it is going to depend on the condition of the CRT. Since you said it made crackling noises that makes me suspect the tube may be cracked and was arcing in the neck. If the tube is broken then the scope is done, part it out. If the tube is intact then it may be worth some troubleshooting to get it working if only so you can sell it as a working parts scope.

Ignoring the bandwidth, most Hameg Scopes have a built in Component Tester which is extremely useful.
It might be worth fixing it just for that function.

It's definitely worth having a good look inside to see if anything has broken or has just become disconnected.

It's probably full with RIFA caps...
Stuff is in a storage in Cardiff that I'll clear out in April 2024. If anyone's interested pls reach out to me.
I've also got a signal generator, same issue: loud bang and smoke when I powered it on.
Can't ship due to poor condition (see 1st picture).

I find CRT scopes to still be useful. And this is mainly for the actual CRT and the XY mode. Of course you can use XY mode on digital scopes but I was never quite happy with how they render on digital scopes.

Also like others have said Hameg have their handy component tester.

Having said that though. Your unit looks in a pretty bad shape. I don't think I would bother repairing it personally. I would either use it for parts or sell it on ebay to someone else who needs parts.

Note that this thread is from 2021, the OP only revived it to say that he is looking to dispose of it.
Best Regards, Chris

The OP should really post this in the buy/sell/wanted section of the forum, that is where people offer stuff they no longer want.

If you still have the manual and your offer is still valid, I would be happy if you would scan it and post it here.
