Has anyone done backlight mod on HP 437B?

I have an HP 437B power meter.  As it is common to this era of HP gear, it uses LCD screen with very poor back lighting.  Yesterday, I took it apart hoping to see an easy way to replace the light source, but I couldn't find obvious way to do this.  I know some other HP stuff has side lit LEDs but this is not the case.  In fact, I couldn't find anything that would light up.

Has anyone done backlight improvement on this piece?

If space is problem and size of LCD you may try some  Electroluminescent (EL) Tape Strip
If you find for LCD size,there are many sizes and color variants.
