Continuity test vs IC
« on: September 17, 2016, 10:00:32 pm »
Hello Folks,
sorry to be a nuissance here - but I finally found a few minutes to work on the TDS754D again.

I had the heroic idea to test some of the soldered contacts of the 71024 RAM ICs using my normal multimeters continuity testing...without thinking.

So now I ask for experience: is this a very bad idea and can I give up the attenuator. Or is it low risk in practice? AFAIK, the 2V should not be much of a problem...

Yes, it's low risk in practice as voltage and current in digital DMM is not enough to turn on a diode junction of transistor but be mindful of static electricity from fingers/body or clothing even feet walking on carpet flooring which can range from hundreds to kilo volts. ;) Unless you are work on pcb boards with anti static mat and ESD handstraps which might restrict free movement if you want to take the precautions
