Help me save a Samsung from landfill
« on: November 30, 2018, 09:11:49 am »
Hi - hoping someone here might be able to help. I've acquired a Samsung UA55ES6200 with a screen fault. From the center to the left hand side the image gets darker with repeated horizontal banding or horizontal patterning in a 5 pixel height repeating pattern. When switching between screen displays there is some odd slow coloured fading on the extreme left. The right hand side appears to be ok. There is a video of the fault here - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fh4TAOJQQ-ZQgF7UlqHQF22BmVnwhTnW/view?usp=sharing and an image here(everything missing to the right is unaffected) https://drive.google.com/file/d/12d-9TddyRQhuCwHyQde-pJpoUfwxKSzQ/view?usp=sharing Imgur link here for anyone uncomfortable with a google drive link https://imgur.com/a/OisMbOW

Thanks for any ideas. I can solder SMD parts if needed.

hum   is it t-con board related,  normally its a pcb between the main pcb and the lcd panel, you may have 1 or 2 flat ribbon connector going to it, and the output is going to the front lcd panel

I'm going to try disconnecting the t con output ribbons one at a time and see what the panel does, and maybe try swapping them to see if the fault moves left to right. I suspect the LCD panel might be faulty.

Try reseating the flat ribbon cables, specifically on the side with the problem.

Cheers, I have poked them while it's running with no change, but will reseat them as the next step.

I tried running it without the t con output ribbons both left and right sides (and reseating). I'm not sure what to make of the results though. On the left hand side with the right disconnected, the image was not refreshed. On the right hand side with the left connected you can see evidence of some of the missing lines - I'm not sure though if t con output is "brick wall" left and right or if there is some blending? A couple of videos in this folder https://drive.google.com/open?id=18K6m_msYLsWrWwTtqKc_agfH8LjYq123 - apologies for the terrible quality - lighting was against me and I had to hold the TV and camera at the same time! Cheers for any help.

well it may be the lcd panel with its integrated drivers chip,  i think the recycling option will be the best choice ?

Maybe sell the psu board and or the main board too for a few $$

had a problem like this on a 32 inch lg full hd put in the trash one month ago, it was similar to a t-con board problem, changed it 20$, but the real problem was the lcd drivers chip embedded in the pcb foil,  this kind of foil is very complicated to work with ...

Oh this feels more like where the problem might be. I'll pop the surround off it and see what is under that, but it might be a writeoff by the looks. Thanks for the tips!

Cutting the CKV/STVP line might be worth trying before I turf this one https://www.scribd.com/document/355891392/samsung-panel-repair-v1-7

Why don't you just use it with security cameras, or something like that. Seems to be a waste to just put in a landfill.

This doesn't look good  :( I take it there is no bypass fix for this when it is burnt?

The upside is that you have a clear part number to order a new part, but, the downside is that those are very fiddly to replace.

Ha oh I missed the joke there ;-) I had a proper look - there are quite a few lines heading in and out of that tiny chip  ;D

So it seems like it is fixed! I removed all the drivers from the bad side and it is working fine. I guess it might not last, but I had no other options to try. Thanks for all the input :-)

that seems hardcore, did you try just removing the fried one first, or did you just go for it? :) afaik this will put more load on the remaining ones, should make one side of the screen crappier

Well I had nothing to lose at this stage. Yes I just removed the fried one and once I saw that fixed that block I went for it! Surprisingly the two sides are exactly the same. I'm not the first to try this apparently

You've recovered a usable display, is anything worse about the picture compared to when the TV was new?

I didn't see it when it was new, but it appears to be working 100% as it should be.
