Help soldering Molex LA75 type FPCs
« on: March 22, 2024, 03:47:03 pm »
Hi,

I seem to fail soldering Molex LA75[1] type FPCs to a PCB.
While I have no problems with some other fine pitch connectors, but I'm at a loss why I just can't get those connectors to actually stick to the solder.

It looks like it's too little sonder, so that the contacts are slightly too far away, but the tiny pads don't seem to hold more solder. Also, I can't press on the connector when it's hot as it will dent the plastic.

So far, I've tried 3 types of solder (Regular SnPb, 183° and 138°) and different fluxes without success.

Thanks for any advice or video you can point me to (I can't even find a YT video of someone soldering this type of connector)

Sounds like you are applying heat to the top of the connector and the heat is not reaching the metal before the plastic melts. Apply the hot air to the other side of the PCB.This limits the heat to the plastic of the connector. The PCB can handle more heat than direct heat to the connector.
