Help with Metcal MX-PS5000 parts ID
« on: February 17, 2024, 03:19:40 am »
Hello all,

I was given an MX-PS5000. I powered it on and used the iron from my 500. Everything powered up and it looked good except the power output shows 0. I tried a reset, tried the other port, tried tweezers but noting changes.
I’ve read on another site about D12 can be a problem on a number of these. I noticed before I opened it the tamper sticker had been torn. Once inside I removed D12 to test it and it shows fine. I show the proper voltages in the back. I think it is 48 and 24volts. What I did find is the 2.4v/8h nicad memory battery is dead and leaking.
There is an RTV type adhesive stuck to it that also has what appears to be a Crystal stuck to it as well. I went to remove the battery but didn’t see the Crystal when I clipped the battery leads. Oops…does anyone know what the part number is for that component?
While I was in there I also noticed that C73 is missing. It definitely used to be there from the looks of the solder pad. It is the bottom of 5 capacitors that are oriented in a column on the  lower left side of the display side of the board. Does anyone know if Metcal or thermaltronics sells parts for these units?
Are there schematics available? I found some for the 500 but they are not the same.

Does anyone have the part number or value for that capacitor C73?

Thanks for any input on this.

Don.

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/reviews/metcal-mx-5200-and-mx-5000-firmware-and-data-eeprom-information/

The crystal is probably 32.768khz for Ds1305 rtc

There is no info on the capacitor c73 anywhere, so try a similar value as one of the others and hope

hello, my friend. I can open a couple of stations for you to find out the denomination. Metkal does not sell spare parts or circuit design elements. All production has long been moved to China except for the tips themselves.

Thank you for the reply and help. Unfortunately, of the 5 capacitors I think there are 3 different values. It would be quite a guess. I sent an email to the company and was told someone would contact me. I haven’t heard a thing from them.

I’ll probably keep it around a few more weeks. If I can’t locate the parts I’ll send it to the recycle bin.

Thanks again.

Don.

That’s Perfect, thank you so much.
Now I need to source the cap C73 and the Crystal Y3. I think Y3 might be a challenge.

::) ::) ::) I understand what you mean. in the 5000 series these are memory elements for settings and time, pictured before and after our service. You don't have to install these elements at all.
