HGST/WDC Ultrastar He12/HC520
« on: March 18, 2024, 05:16:39 pm »
This is a HGST/WDC Ultrastar He12/HC520.

The HDD is spinning, but not be recognized, I guess this is the culprit, I think is an SMD inductor.

I'm looking for the schematics to find the value.  Maybe I can remove it and put a 0hmns bridge?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

That appears to be a normal moulding mark. I believe that this area is the -3V supply for the preamp (on the headstack). This supply may not be enabled if the board is tested off the drive.

This tutorial should explain how this voltage is generated:

See the attachments for the other voltage test points.

That said, if the drive spins up, then the PCB is almost always OK. Instead the fault is due to the drive's inability to reach the reserved firmware area on the platters (System Area, SA, discware). That is, the fault is most likely related to bad heads.

Thank you.  yes, I found other pictures and they have this mark, when I saw that, I thought was burned.

I'll investigate.  Thank you for all the details.
