Hot air station, trying to find wiring diagram...
« on: September 02, 2016, 05:35:36 am »
Hi guys,

I have a W.E.P 2 in 1 rework station and whislt using the hot air gun, heard zapping/electrical sound, now it doesn't heat up.. fan on it works, but doesn't heat.

I know it's a cheap-Chinese unit so probably not worth the effort, but I want to try and repair it (or atleast diagnose the issue for practice/experience)

Seems to some in different 'brands' too, not just WEP (according to google).

Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction where I might be able to locate a wiring giagram for this unit?

Any help would be super, :)

Regards,

Hi Jane, I've inspected it, couldnt see anything burnt or anything, though it was covered/wrapped in some sort of metallic-looking paper/foil substance.. flaked everywhere and broke apart when I removed the element. Whats a good way to test? I was going to check to see if voltage was being supplied to it, but was trying to find a wiring diagram so i can test the rest of the connectors/wires too.

I think he meant check the resistance of the heater element. The "flaky" stuff was probably the mica insulator to insulate the heater coils from the metal tube.

Unplug unit, open up the heater and measure it's element.

edit: I just opened up a spare heater handle (Yihua 858D) I have and the heater measures 20 ohm (cold).  Yours (heater) will be different...but not that different.

Yes.measure the heating elements and check if there is any voltage coming to that heater

Thanks guys, Ill measure it up and see what readings I get.

Alternatively, I did come across 2x handles similar priced as a replacement heating element, though for different models... but just wondering, what the chances are the would require different power requirements compared the original one my unit came with?

I like the idea of the heating gun that can be removed from the unit rather than being hardwired in. I bought some of these just incase I do go the route of making the handle modular.

Thanks again :)

the heater is mains - i dont know the rating on microphone connectors, but i feel the pins are way to close together.

Oh, darn :( ... what if I was to put some sort of insulation between the connectors? like hot glue or silicon/rubber ?

have you seen how close the contacts are to the metal shell inside the connector??

besides, the pins are on the live-side (chassis connector)  - deadly if somebody pulls the conector out while it's powered.

The DIN socket is for the soldering iron which is not mains voltage, the hot air is a captive cable which can't be unplugged from outside.

Ooooh ok, thanks guys :) .. looks like Ill have a couple of 8pin connectors in my stash to collect dust lol :(

Regrading testing resistance.. which wires did you probe? (sorry for silly question, still learning but rarely dont get to test parts often).. I probed the Black and Red wires, didnt get a reading (or continuity)

Thanks :)

sometimes,
but if you look at the thread for customising the standalone hot-air units, many of those do use microphone connectors to connect the head.

Thanks :)
