| How much should I charge my customers for component level repair? |

Hey y'all I figured I would add to this thread rather than start a new one since I have a similar question. This thread had some great information but it was started ~10 yrs ago so I assume everyone's ideas of acceptable rates have changed (due to inflation/changes in market). But anyway, I started a YouTube channel last year just to document my personal and work related projects. I am a Lab Instrumentation Engineer for a biotech company (I maintain their lab equipment). I am completely self-taught in electrical engineering and still have a lot to learn. But I love repairing electronics; it is the main way I learn. I never meant this channel to be more than a videoblog, but it has garnered some attention from others in the biotech industry. I'm getting requests to repair their lab equipment circuit boards. This is a pretty niche, but highly sought after skill. Lab equipment manufacturers are some of the worst offenders of repair obstruction practices. They refuse schematics and even replacement parts to customers. The prices for equipment and their parts are also extremely inflated. On top of that, the lab equipment manufacturers make big money off the service contracts they offer for said equipment; it is also overpriced and they don't do board repair. They just swap boards. So to have someone repair them is generally more cost effective. What I am struggling with is how I should charge for my services. Do I do an hourly labor rate + parts? Or a fixed rate? At what rate should I charge? What is the avg rate these days in 2024? Should I offer any warranty on my services? Any input that more experienced members might have would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! -Frank |
