You do not specify which problems can be repaired by software; definitely not problems due to faulty hardware.

As if they fail often (in hardware) anyway... if anything, flash drives have proven to be remarkably resilient.

if you were familiar the production of flash memory, you would know, that only the junk quality flash chips end up in sticks; first grade chips in sticks you maybe find in expensive high density brand sticks, but not in the department store grade sticks for 5 bucks

then I should throw out the car radio; supposedly only reading the sticks, I already had to throw the third

Really?!? My oldest flash drive is from around 2001 and I’ve never had one fail, ever.
