HP 1703A - no x deflection
« on: July 05, 2017, 03:08:36 pm »
Hello,

I have a chance to acquire an HP 1703A "portable" storage scope (with some cosmetic damage to knobs unfortunately). I've checked it out and it achieves a spot but seems to have no X deflection (e.g. horizontal position control has no effect; vertical control and deflection is fine). Can't therefore see a sweep.

The schematics and service manual are obtainable. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this model or this fault, comments on difficulty of repair, approach, etc? I'm an electronics learner. I do have a 2nd (modern digital storage) scope.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

This document by their major competitor might be helpful. Should cover pretty much the same era, so technology should be similar.

Update: The seller believes this is only a timebase problem and using an external timebase will work. I'll test that at a future opportunity.

If so, I still plan on investigating the fault.

I'm obtaining the manual and schematics on paper for 1703A so if anyone else needs a copy, feel free to contact me. There is a version online but it's very poor quality.
