HP 3312A Function Generator
« on: December 30, 2023, 11:25:51 pm »
Hi all,
After a few decades, I turned on the HP 3312A,
after a few seconds smoke came out, and from the smell I realized that a capacitor had probably exploded.
I opened the HP and found that the paper capacitor in parallel with the power socket had exploded.
Although it is not very important, I would like to put in a new one, but I cannot see the capacitance value.
What I can see is:
PME 271 Y 522 GPF 40/085/56
I think it works as a noise suppressor.
I tried to see the various manuals on the net, but I couldn't find the
value of the capacitor, can you help me?
happy new year
wally

Value is not critical. 0.047uF should be OK provided it is rated for 240vAC operation or about 630vDC.

Do not replace it with the same brand as these are notorious for exploding. The body cracks and moisture gets in to short the capacitor elements.
an electronics nut from wayback...

As per the service manual here, it is C601 on the last schematic (4th-last page of document).
The BOM listing on page 6-11 has C601 as: "CAPACITOR-FXD  .02uF  +80-20% 600WVDC CER"

Also, I checked my 3312A and it's not a RIFA but an ordinary ceramic cap. See attached.
Since it's across the mains, it should be safety rated X2.

What I can see is:
PME 271 Y 522 GPF 40/085/56

22nF, 250VAC, Class Y2 (although it's connected across the mains).

Yes, stay away from those RIFA caps, they are bad news.

Which RIFA caps? As far as I know they currently make both paper and polypropylene dielectric class X/Y caps. Their polypropylene caps should be just as reliable as those of any other manufacturer.
