HP 3458A Error 206 after Socketing U132
« on: June 05, 2023, 08:25:18 am »
Hello there,
This is the second thread/part on the repair of my HPAK 3458A.
Just to bring everyone up to speed: My 3458A is a HP device, being built around 1999-2001.
The digital board iteration is the version with only one ROM IC.
The electrolytic Capacitors on A4 and A6 have been replaced recently.

The only perishables left inside were the Dallas NVRAMs.
After desoldering and socketing the U132 NVRAM, I turned the instrument back on and was greeted with a "HPIB Failiure" Error.
I did use ESD-Rated tools and a protective mat on which the pcb laid during desoldering.

If anyone knows what the source of the Error 206 might be, please let me know.
Cheers
Ole

Did you try reseating the fiber optic cables that connect the boards?

I did not...
While the instrument works, the only error is the 206 HPIB Failiure.
The whole ordeal was done in two parts:
Part 1: Replacement of all electrolytics (A4 and A6)
Part 2: Desoldering of A5U132 and soldering of a fitting socket in its place.
Between part 1 and 2 were multiple weeks and i did run the Meter in between.
