HP 54600A Repair
(1/1)
hiltz1:
Hello,
I am attempting I fix a HP54600A I received broken.
When I turned it on the screen displayed a solid thick line across the centre and it started to smell like the magic smoke...
After dismantling, the sniff test narrowed in on two detonated tantalum capacitors on the motherboard.
The two capacitors in the CRT driver that are common issues with this scope look visibly ok.
Is there anything else I should check or that might also be damaged or do I have a good chance of repairing it by replacing those detonated caps?
Thanks for any assistance!
coromonadalix:
for sure check voltages lines, if the tants have been changed, i dont know theses models, if sv manuals exists for them
i dont know if somewhere you have a video signal you could check on a monitor ....
your deflection seems reduced, and maybe we see faint characters ?? rolled up ?
hiltz1:
Once I have new caps I will check the voltages,
I have found some manuals but no full circuit diagram.
I think the faint characters visible are burn-in / image retention on the CRT as they are still there when fully powered off.
hiltz1:
I've replaced the caps as well as the two on the CRT driver responsible for vertical deflection.
The display is now the correct size and showing a waveform although all of the text along with some of the other UI elements are missing.
