Title: hp 54600B privilege violation : OH
Post by: Bartolome on February 06, 2024, 07:56:50 am
My HP 54600B has been showing a horizontal and vertical calibration error message for some time when I turn it on.
I decided to replace the NVRAM, MK48Z18B-10 with a new one, encouraged by reading other posts that had done it successfully. To my regret, now the oscilloscope has died ( privilege violation : OH  ) and does not respond to any key, so I cannot perform self-calibration.
I also can't find a way to perform a hard reset, if this is the solution. Any ideas?

Have you used a ground-free solder iron?
Have you inserted a socket for the new NVRAM?
Can you try to seat the old NVRAM back?

Hmmm.... could you have gotten a counterfeit NVRAM?  I use a socket and install an original Dallas Chip.  Perhaps the scope doesn't like the timing of that one.  Had problems like that before.

You can also take your old one and grind into it to disconnect the original battery and fit an external one, which I have also done many times, to avoid fake chips.

Backup your old NVRAM to file using your programmer (you have one?).
Check your new NVRAM with your programmer.
If OK, write backup file to your new NVRAM.
Then insert your new NVRAM into your 54600B.
Good luck!

answers to the questions:
.-Have you used a ground-free solder iron?
My Hakko soldering station never gave me "ESD" problems.
.-Have you inserted a socket for the new NVRAM?
Can you try to seat the old NVRAM back?
Yes, I took the precaution of inserting a socket and immediately put the old NVRAM back in. with the same result.
.- I use a plug and install an original Dallas chip.
I bought an NVRAM in China!
.- Back up your old NVRAM to a file using your programmer (do you have one?).
No, I will buy a programmer and keep you informed.
But I'm afraid that if reconnecting the original NVRAM hasn't resolved it, something different has happened. I'm still looking for how to do a hard reset on this oscilloscope.

Some of the other models can be reset by holding down one of the keys while powering on the scope.  Unfortunately I do not know if that applies to THIS one or what key.....  but it's worth a try as there aren't many keys.

Weird, because I HAD one of these with the same error and it was a dead Dallas chip.  Just replacing it and power cycling it fixed it, then do the re-calibration.

I downloaded the service manual, which sadly is of no help at all.....   :-//

There may be a chance a track got damaged or shorted when changing the NVRAM.

My Eprom has definitely died, when desoldering the NVRAM it may have suffered a static discharge or something similar.
I tried a firmware update sold on EBAY for the HP54600A and my oscilloscope boots without the damn "privilege violation" message, but it doesn't fit my model.
I just hope that someone on this list can tell me where to download the 54600B firmware or sell me an eeprom already recorded.
Thank you all

Firmware for the 54602B attached. I don't know if that will work on the 54600B.

Firmware for the 54602B attached.

Based on what is written internally, the firmware is valid for 54600B, 54601B, 54602B and 54603B.

Thanks to oPossum and picburner! I will save this firmware, waiting to buy a valid recorder for this eeprom. Mine doesn't work. Any idea of a not very expensive recorder for this eeprom, for example this one in the aliexpress image? Thank you.

What EPROM is this? I can burn you one and stick it in a letter.

AM27C4096 to record the signature for the oscilloscope boot. If it manages to boot properly then we have to deal with the MK48Z18B-10 NVRAM which is the beginning of the problem.
I live in Madrid, Spain. I am delighted that you can record the firmware for me. If you want to record it, we will talk privately to find a shipping and payment solution.

Solution HP 54600B privilege violation: OH
I can finally say that my HP54600 has come back to life. Thanks to all the users and especially to Drhex, without your selfless help I would not have successfully completed this repair.
Although at first I thought that the eprom was bad, only when Drhex provided me with a new one recorded by him, I was able to verify that the problem was in the NVRAM, MK48Z18B-10 purchased on Aliexpress. It was enough to put in a new NVRAM from old stock and the oscilloscope is working and calibrated again.
