HP 8165A can't get the top cover off!
« on: November 30, 2019, 04:10:49 pm »
It is not in the service manaul so how do I get the top cover off?

I thought all I had to do was remove the rear panel feet and slide the cover back? Nope.

I've remove the side panel under the handle - no help.

Anybody know how to do it please?

Thanks.

Giddy.

I don't know about the 8165A specifically, but if it's like the other chassis from this era there is a single captive screw in the center of the top panel on the back.  Unscrewing this will slowly move the top panel backwards and when the screw has disengaged from the threads the entire top panel can be slid backwards.

The bottom panel should be similar.

Just a guess.

Sometimes the circlip on the screw on the inside of the cover gets lost, in which case you can unscrew the center screw entirely.  If that happens, take it out then use a small flat bladed screw driver to carefully pry at the front corners of the cover.  The cover has to slide back a centimeter or so before it will lift clear.

It can get tight if the case has been banged up.

Thanks Mark, it was the centre screw, it was hidden by the label saying "Calibration void if removed"!

Thanks all.
