HP 8640B replacement gears?
« on: November 02, 2021, 12:31:52 am »
I need to fix my 8640b and I see that there's a seller in India selling brass gears without screws for $55.00,  Has anyone tried them and how many hours does it take?
Thanks

Han

Bonjour, I have many of the HP 8640B excellent RF generators, with the original  gears.

Mechanical gear work requires complete removal of front panel and all the concentric gear shafts and knobs.
Great risk to loose a tiny part or fail to properly reassemble.

The complete manual and forums threads have more details on the procedure, perhaps 50-100 steps and many pages.

NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!

I would Post to the groups.io  with the Indian ebay gear link and photos of your gear situation.

Bon chance

Hey Bob
Thanks for the tips. Next month I'll be 81 so age has effects but I think I can do it.   I can sell it for the parts if I don't succeed. Two gears are split at the set screw.

Hank,

Keep us posted.  I'm interested in what those Indian gears look like and how your repair goes. There's a 8640 in surplus store nearby that's been calling my name. But I'm SURE that some of the gears are split. They're not one of HP's better designs.
