Heathkit IO-105 refurbishing
« on: January 29, 2017, 06:05:24 am »
I just got myself an old Heathkit IO-105 dual channel 15MHz analog scope.  Is it worth refurbishing this?  And where might I find a service manual for it?

Hello, it is usual to make a small presentation during his first post on the forum.
It's not an obligation, but it's more polite and more friendly.

Anyway, welcome to this forum.

The Heathkit IO-105 is a dual channel version of the IO-104 which can be easily found on the Internet.

For example:
Schematics of IO-104 can help a lot.

This is an oscilloscope that suffers from some problems like drift and instabilities.
It was a kit and therefore it depends of the skill of the person who soldered it.
So, do not invest much in such an oscilloscope.

You talk about "refurbishing" ..... why not just just put it back in running order?
There is probably little to do: to clean contacts, potentiometers, test and recalibrate.

Also check the electrolytic capacitors and change those that are out of tolerance.

Nothing really difficult.
Good luck

A lot of people here have champagne appetites on your pocketbook.  These basic scopes are more than sufficient for learning electronics.  Every piece of electronic test equipment has limitations.  Learning to work around these is an important lesson.  I wouldn't do anything to it till a problem is obvious and you have a full understanding.
