HP/Agilent 33120A - both broken cables for BNC output
« on: January 25, 2020, 05:27:21 am »
hello, all

I am pretty new to repair and I got a Agilent (same as HP) 33120A from junk yard.
When I opened it, the output cable and BNC cable were both broken.
I powered it up, and probed at the open-ended output cable and found that it is working just fine. Lucky me!
Now, my problem is how to repair the BNC cable inside the unit. Please refer to the pictures as attached.

Do you guys have any ideas??

Thanks a lot!!

Zhao

Potential remedies in order of cost...

You can try and trim the cable, insert the cable back into the BNC jack and solder the cable outer shield to the BNC ground but it may not be a reliable connection for the center clip.

You can replace the BNC jack, trim the cable, solder the center and ground to the new panel jack.  The original BNC jack may be tough to remove.

You can look for replacement cables or a panel with front jacks installed.

Thank you very much for the detailed suggestions!!

I was lucky yesterday to carefully put it back to BNC connectors, and kapton taped it around the inner side of the case.

Now it works just fine!!
Thanks again

You are lucky, that was an easy fix.

Usually these coax cables are crimped on to the front connector and it seems the crimp tubes are still on the cable. I would try to crimp them on again or may be just push them on for good ground connection.
There are 3 kinds of people in this world, those who can count and those who can not.

I also had a beat up BNC port for my 33120A. I wonder how was the BNC port secured to the plastic case in the first place as I don't see any screw/nut there. Do you know any compatible BNC header/socket that'd fit the plastic panel? Thanks in advance.
