Ibanez Combo Amp: Unusual Input Jack
« on: December 22, 2022, 06:55:37 pm »
I have an old Ibanez SWX20 instrument combo amp with a broken input jack.

This would be a simple repair save for the fact that I am unable to find a suitable replacement part.
The shunt mechanism on the original jack is sprung on the left and opens on the right.
All the other jacks I've seen so far have this reversed, opening on the right.
Installing one of these would send the signal to ground.

Here's a typical jack found online:
[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ]

Here's an album with photos of the amp PCB in question:

You'll notice in the photos that there is a metal grounding collar around the input. I believe this is for chassis ground, which is kept separate from signal ground by passing it through a capacitor. I haven't removed the jack yet but it appears to be a separate part.

I realize that a little creativity can get me around this but I'd rather find a matching part before resorting to hacks.

I've contacted Ibanez but I have not yet heard back from them.

I'm hoping someone here has the resources to help me find the right replacement part.

Anyone?

Ibanez beeing now made in China I do not think they have designed proprietiry parts, the connector is likely a standard part that is used in similar type of gear. Try "guitar amps repair" shops in your area.

I don't have one at hand to verify but it looks like housing is symmetric and contacts can be inserted from opposite sides. Maybe destroy plastic housing on one connector to remove undamaged contacts. Then destructively remove contacts from another connector to not damage the housing. Then reinsert new contacts from opposite sides.

Have you gone through all the catalogs from Neutrik / Rean, and Switchcraft ? form factor looks very familiar.

Plan B in the unlikely scenario that it is really a custom part, finding a mechanically-compatible part and rewiring the PCB traces would be my preference.

And it's not what OP needs. He needs similar but with switching contacts on opposite side.

Sorry, I missed that detail. The pins should be able to be removed and reassembled the other way. I've done something similar in the past.

Hey, so it turns out that Ibanez replied to my email. They were in the middle of inventory and won't be able to ship until January 3rd but they do have the part in stock.

My thanks to everyone who replied in the thread.

Yes, I pored through all those catalogs. It's a familiar form factor but as I said the shunts open the wrong way 'round, invalidating all the lookalikes.

Yeah, sorry, there were some server glitches when I was posting. I kept getting some kind of error but it turns out the post went through. I only found out now when i came back to try again. I must have double-posted inadvertently.
