Identify laptop power IC MS4QB
« on: July 09, 2017, 12:19:11 pm »
I have a laptop with what appears to be a damaged power IC. I would guess that these 2 chips are for 5V and 3.3V so very similar circuits. Second pin from the bottom on the right chip is shorted to ground the same is not true for the chip on the left. The problem is that the markings are either a code or there's simply no info these parts. The chip on the left has "MT4R0" and the one on the right has "MS4QB" (possibly Q could be 0 and B could be 8 ) on it. It's a bit hard to see but I did try several combinations with nothing remotely matching the chip turned up. Is it a code or is it just a custom part with no info? If the latter is there anything else worth trying besides replacing the whole motherboard?

Going by the style of the component designators I'm going to say it's a Compal board, but I won't know for sure if you don't post the exact laptop model...

That would be a Quanta Y11A. Schematic shows SY8208B/SY8208C for 3.3 and 5V respectively.

Nice find! How did you identify the board?

I see the datasheet, after removing the chip it seems it's not the issue as the short remains. There are 4 caps that are shorted and if I connect external 5V to 5V rail, IT8987 ship overheats so it looks that is the fault. Probably not worth  fixing this as if I am not mistaken this chip would need to be flashed before it could work.
