Impressively awful soldering done by repair shop.
« on: November 17, 2013, 11:38:23 pm »
From a Panasonic plasma, TH-42PZ8BA I am repairing. This is what a TV repair shop has done in an attempt to repiar the common 10 blinks fault; amusingly, the set continues to display 10 blink error with this damage (the fault is on the stand up PCB attached to it.) I was able to reverse most of the damage, though I had to use some jumper wires because several pads were hanging on by a hair.

Wow that is horrible.  I haven't seen a TV repair shop in who knows how long, was that a certified Panasonic shop or just some local place?

It was some local "cash-for-electronics" shop which also advertises repair services.

Anyone know what the white gunk is? I was able to wipe it off with a damp cloth.

Looks like they used crusty old pipe solder!

The white gunk is probably residue from a flux cleaner (alcohol). You can see the way it flows on the edge.

Man that is really bad. Maybe he used a blow torch?

Good lord!

Why does it look all grey and disgusting like that? Did they use 50/50 pipe solder or something?

It was some local "cash-for-electronics" shop which also advertises repair services.

In that case, I am surprised they did not attempt a repair with duct tape (the cheap kind), WD-40 (For what? I don't know either), and a blowtorch to solder.

The name of the shop was not confirmed to me, but they are on Kirkstall Road, Leeds, near the post office. Anyone familiar with that part of Leeds will probably know the place.

I've seen people picking up a soldering iron for the first time do better.

This is inexcusable for being paid work.

Oh dear - that's nasty.

The white snotty stuff looks like it came out of that hole and ran downward. See how it encircles the open hole?
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

I find it comical that after all that he bothered to clean the flux...and it's no surprise he botched that up too.

My mother once brought my TV to the same repair man where it got repaired before. When we picked it up he said someone had repaired it before and his soldering was shoddy at best. You should have seen his face when I told him he was the only one who has ever repaired it  :-DD :-DD :-DD

Looks like he used a butane torch to work on it.  :palm:
