JVC LCD TV problem - bad TCON, probably?
« on: October 14, 2020, 06:33:35 pm »
Hi everyone... could I possibly ask for a little advice about my TV?

This is an old CCFL thing, a JVC TV LT-32DR1BJ. A while ago it suddenly went dark - the same across the whole picture, and not like the backlights or inverter had gone, in fact with some images it makes you think it's fixed itself, but no, it hasn't. Ghosting and weirdly saturated colours too. Checked all of the voltages and capacitors I could since I couldn't find a service manual, and after finding messages here and a video someone did on Youtube, I decided it was most likely the gamma chip on the TCON board.

Got a replacement board through and that gave a different set of problems - more washed out than dark (so backlights are definitely ok), and weird moving patterns when the brightness is below a certain point. The gamma chip is a different model too but the board is the same part number. Then also noticed that one of the inductors is cracked. I've attached a photo of the replacement one with that cracked inductor, and that one together with my original one. I'm aware that eBay boards seem to push the definition of 'new' but if it worked I wouldn't mind for the price.

So... a) is the cracked ferrite on that inductor as bad a thing as it seems, and b) should I still have had more success with the replacement board, does it point to something maybe being wrong on another board, or maybe this replacement has other problems too?

Thanks for any ideas :)

How about a little process of elimination :

Reattach the old TCON board to TV
Get a CCFL tester and check your CCFLs one by one. Replace the faulty tubes and turn on TV.
If problem persists :
Swap Inductor(old) with Inductor(New)
Connect new TCON to TV and test.
If image issues persist :
Swap Gamma IC(old) with Gamma IC(new)
Do a test.....you get the idea....

I suppose you know about replacement board PART NUMBERS - That it's the number on the PAPER STICKER that you have to match - the bare boards may be identical and have the same screenprinted numbers, but different components fitted and different links, etc. for different models of receiver, or different countries versions.
