Laptop Charger Issues
« on: September 03, 2015, 10:38:04 pm »
Hi. This is my first post.  I have a HP Pavilion dv6. It has a charging issue that I can't see to solve. When I plug in the original charger it doesn't want to charge the laptop. I checked to see if the charger was working. I measured it with my Multimeter :-DMM and it was putting out 18.9volts 3.5amps which it is supposed too. So it's not the charger. I used another charger For the same type of computer and it Worked to charge my laptop. So it's not the computer. I don't know what's going on and I can't seem to figure it out :-//.

Any help will be great. I don't want to but another charger if I don't have too.

Probably something wrong with a thin a pin in the center. IIRC it is for charger power detection. Could be damaged pin or broken wire in the cable.

Probably there was just a resistor to GND, measure resistance to GND on working one and compare with faulty one. Google about it too. Usually cable gets damaged within a few centimeters from the power brick or near the connector where most of the bending happens. You could crack open the brick, check the wires in the cable. If faulty, cut 10-15 cm of cable and check again. If it measures OK, solder the cable to the PCB and glue the brick back into one piece.

Once I got an HP dv series laptop that would sometimes refuse to charge the battery, even with an original charger. Believe it or not, I removed the internal third pin connection (took the wire from the connector on the PCB) and everything was fine and dandy.
