LCD problem on old cell phone

hi!

i found an old motorola startac in a drawer, but sadly the lcd seems to be broken.

i've checked the contacts to the lcd pcb and all seems fine. i guess that either the flat ribbon-cable to the lcd itself has some contact failure or the lcd is simply broken. it also looks like some liquid leaked

usually it should initialize with every element black on the lcd. after this, motorola startac should be written on it, but only fragments appear.

did anybody experience a similiar problem?
