Post by: Nick_Balog on May 18, 2015, 03:02:31 am
Anyone ever troubleshoot a flickering jandy watercolors pool light?

Ok.... For anyone looking at this, I think I made some progress. I ruled out the thermal shutdown and solved a grounding issue, however my LEDs are still dim.  Can anyone point me to a good tutorial or explanation on how a 110 source gets stepped down to work with LEDs (I'm guessing it's being converted to 12vdc at some point but I'm lost without schematics)

For safety,
pool lights are almost always 12v. It is illegal (in South Africa) to install one in a pool, if the Voltage it operates on is more than that.

Normally there is a transformer in the Pool DB or Box, that steps the voltage down from Mains to 12vAC. Then the 12v goes to the pool fitting, that (might have) a Bridge Rectifier or Diodes to convert from AC to DC...

Well, I was poking around and decided that I would replace some caps in question and these two units, although I don't quite know how to identify them nor their function on the board.  The Caps are 50v if that gives you an idea. One sorta looks like it has a slight bow so it could have gone bad but it's really too slight to say it's shot by observing. I touched the top of it and got a slight jolt. In all my years of doing arcade boards I never had that happen, but that's at the 5volt level.
