Metcal hand-piece compatability
« on: September 25, 2024, 04:37:41 pm »
I have two Metcal power supplies; a new MX-5200 and also the older MX-500p-11.

The MX-500p-11 with a MX-H1-AV and STTC-144 tip doesn't get hot at all. I've tried all the obvious stuff (checked the electrolytics) as well as comparing with some of the measurements of a known good unit (http://colinoflynn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/MX-500P-11.pdf). I had to replace U4 and the measurements look good now,  but the tip is still cold. The tip and hand-piece is known to be good because it works fine with the MX-5200.

I've seen that some of the hand-pieces, at least the MX-RM3E has an inductor and capacitor in the handle. I haven't taken apart the MX-H1-AV hand-piece yet but I can't find any info on there being an inductor and capacitor in it.
So my question is: are MX-H1-AV hand-pieces compatible with the older MX-500p-11 power supplies or do I need to use the older MX-RM3E hand-piece?
