Metcal Stand Crack Repair?
« on: October 28, 2020, 04:43:02 pm »
I received a used Metcal stand that was crushed during shipping. Any suggestions for an ideal adhesive to use for repair?

I was figuring epoxy, but the high-temperature nature of it made me figure I should ask first.

Thank you, Chris

I'd try epoxy, you usually don't heat those areas a lot, epoxy should be able to handle the 50-60 degrees.

Go with standard slow setting epoxy too, the quick setting ones aren't as strong.

I would J-B weld it.  It works on automotive.

I was going to use epoxy as others suggested, but I received a reply from the manufacturer around the same time as replies (I had asked them prior to posting but hadn't heard back yet). The Metcal stand is made of phenolic molding compound. It would ideally be repaired with a high temperature cyanoacrylate. Since the areas that might be exposed to high temperatures were not damaged and it was just the rear of the stand that needed repair, I chose to use standard cyanoacrylate at a much lower price. I've been using it now for several months and everything is working as expected.

Thank you, Chris
