Modification Oscilloscope YOKOGAWA DL1640

Hello,

Now that my oscilloscope YOKOGAWA DL1640 is working, I would like to put the latest firmware, but since there is no USB port, we have to find another solution.
I would like to replace the memory card reader with a 3.5 floppy.
You need a slim model with a connection by rigid cable.
Does anyone know the floppy pattern to use?

Hello,

In fact, after reflection:
1)The firmware update will be done once and for all, there is no evolution on this hardware.
2) For the floppy, I have to find one that has a 26-point rigid tablecloth.

And so why not do the opposite:
1) I will only use the floppy once! --> I have a stock of old  3.5 inch drive 36 pins connexion.
I’ll take one of these.
2) I connect a 36-point tablecloth to the floppy and cut the cable. (to have a straight 36-pin cable)
I have disassembled the oscilloscope several times, so it is not a problem to solder the cable on the useful soldering points of the 26 pin connector of the main PCB.
2) Now we have to find the wiring diagram...36pins Floppy <--> 26 pins rigid cable

If you have any...

After I deconnect the floppy, I either unstack the cable or leave it inside.

We can’t see the resistance (100 ohms?) A kind of pullup.

I think your counter is faulty.  Every 3.5 inch floppy I have used has 34 pins not 36.  And that PCB you show also has 2 rows of 17 pins along the bottom.

The floppy disk modules are available to fit.

Issues with non standard protocol, as these are over 20 years old.

Suggest you drop any FW update as they don't exist,

Better for replacement of the CMOS backup battery, but not easy.

We try to leave the old Yokogawa scopes DL 1540, 1740, 7440 and time Analyzers TA720, TA720 as is, and make use of the existing ports.

You’re right, but it’s a keying error that’s 34 pins
For the floppy it is a 26 pin connection (2 rows of 13, 1-25,2-26) See before the picture. Botton right

Yes there is always a risk when exchanging firmware.
Yes for now it works well as well.
But we are always tempted to do better. I will think about that
I saw that you can use XWiever, XWirepuller, etc., but I don’t have an additional card with Ethernet port, USB, GP-IB.
Jonpaul, don’t you have that in your drawers?
A priori it connects to the central connector.
I would like that and much more useful than the update.

All Yokogawa digital scopes have options like PCIM slot, Ethernet port, etc.

There is no " adapter" to add Ethernet afterwards.

For data, FW, screen capture We have used

1, Existing floppy drive ( but some fail from capstan material)
2. USB if it exists
3. Ethernet port

The Yokogawa software you mentioned can work but needs setting up the ports in the scope utility.

What I wanted to say:
My DL1640 has only the VGA port, RS232 series, GO NO GO + the 3 Bnc’s.
On this example (see picture)  the back side has an Ethernet port and USB ports on top.
So I think there may be an additional card that connects to the central connector of the pcb cpu for this. (?)
It’s just a mortgage, you know the equipment better than I do.
If this exists, do you have a reference  or one on yours draws. (?)

Sounds like the Gotek floppy emulator with flat flex interface cable (SFR1M44-DU26 or SFRM720-DU26) could be made to work with FlashFloppy or HxC firmware, or maybe the slim HxC SD-card floppy emulator. This would allow you to use modern mass storage (USB memory sticks or SD cards). Though you might need to make an adapter since the cable pin-out sounds non-standard. There's some discussion here.

Nothing to do with the floppy, but I remember the killer feature of these was that the printout was sideways. This meant you could capture a long SPI or I2C transaction then zoom it and print it out in one long trace. Fab for decodiong and  annotating (though I don't think it would do the decode itself).

Became a Yokogawa afficanado after discovering the HP4195A was designed and built in Japan by YEW.
In 1992..1995 visited Japan and met Yokogawa, who subsequently visited my lab. I acquired a scope, power Analyzers and finally tile Analyzers ( TA320,TA720) used extensively in audio clock jitter tests for AES and transformer, cables.  Still use the DL1740 and DL7440.

1. Chinese floppy disk USB have mechanical and electrical issues to replace the old Japanese floppy drives in the YEW scopes.

2. YEW Ethernet option was NOT  a drop in card, and is NOT field upgradable. different internal PCB, FW, etc.

3. Yokogawa DL 14xx, 15xx, 16xx and 17xx early digital scopes in the compact case are VERY hard to service ( or even to open up) or to change backup battery.

4, No YEW services manuals exist,  and support from Yokogawa USA has  long ended.

 " if it ain't broke DON'T  FIX IT!"
