MTS-4000 YIG oscillator
« on: February 03, 2015, 06:43:00 pm »
Hello all!

I bought this thing (quite inexpensively) on eBay. According to the seller it is 4-ish GHz YIG oscillator. Googling for info on the label (first pic) yields nothing. I'm currently studying this paper -> http://www.vhfcomm.co.uk/A%20Simple%20Approach%20tyo%20YIG%20Oscil.pdf (mine looks similar to Fig.17) while waiting for u.fl to SMA cables to arrive.  I'm not familiar with this type of equipment and was wondering if it would be OK to open it instead of trying to figure out connections with test instruments. If anyone is in possession of manufacturer's data  on this unit, please share!

Thank you for your time!

Regards,
Oleg.

Aside from being careful of tiny connections and delicate parts in general, you should know that the "BeO" on the label refers to Beryllium Oxide, used somewhere in the internal construction.

An innocuous looking white ceramic material, it is VERY toxic if abraded and inhaled.  Unless you are planning on grinding or machining the internal parts, you should be fine.  It is used where an electrical insulator with good RF properties also needs to be a good thermal conductor. Probably located between the heater element and the YIG element itself.

Thanks! I'll be careful. Sadly it seems this is not an oscillator but rather a filter for which I don't possess a signal source. Back to eBay...
