Need help identifying component
« on: August 20, 2021, 08:57:10 am »
I'll keep it short. I haven't been able to find a visual or indicator match in my searches. Hopefully what this component is, will be obvious to a lot of you guys. What is this?

Alt:

Also, any hints on where to find close enough specs for this type of component to aquire a replacement, or how to diagnose it? Without knowing what it is, I'm not quite sure how to tell if this is busted or not.

FWIW, this is a Garmin Nuvi 3590LM that won't charge or communicate over USB after the user inserted the micro-USB plug the wrong way. Functional when charging battery by other means (bench psu), but USB seems dead. I replaced the USB 3311C transciever/controller chip, but no go. I have been unable to find any scematics or service manual for this or any closely similar units.

AFAIK it's only possible by ripping off connector from the PCB. Or maybe connector itself was damaged. Did you check what's going on with +5V VUSB? Usually there is some sort of fuse and TVS. Part in question has nothing to do with the fault. It's a 32.768 Khz crystal.

I'm probably wrong, but it makes me think that if it's not some sort of antenna for the gps, then it's probably a sort of  detector for motion (detect  tilt or orientation so that it can flip the screen) or maybe a shock / acceleration sensor

Yeah, wraper is probably right.  The two ceramic capacitors to ground by the part is common for such parts.

It looks like a crystal by Seiko Epson.
