Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

The original LCD was really not good; the layers delaminated with humidity and heat.

You will have a hard time trying to find one still in good shape - even if you buy a broken "sacrificial" multimeter with a good LCD, there is no guarantee it will last. This happened to me in the past, where the "good" replacement LCD lasted for four months and I had to replace it with a modern one.
