Negative output Voltage from a power supply?
« on: September 09, 2024, 05:33:14 pm »
I have a variable 1kV DC power supply that I want to have as an up to -1kV output with respect to the positive rail tied to ground.
The output currently goes out to a BNC which I tried to isolate from the grounded chassis.
And ofc being very careful with the supply, recognizing the dangers.

Any suggestions from this power supply, or general ideas on the key components?

Thanks!

Out of interest, how much current will it deliver? I'm hoping you will live long enough to read all the replies!  :o

It can deliver up to 60 mA, but haha ofc being super careful. Letting things discharge, wearing thick gloves, checking voltages, etc.

Should I move this elsewhere? I wasn't sure exactly where to put it?

Well, it clearly isn't a repair that you are doing. How about 'Beginners'?

I can’t say whether that supply is safe to reverse the polarity on.

But what I would highly recommend is to replace the BNC with an MHV jack instead — that’s the medium high voltage variant of BNC (longer insulation, etc), or even SHV (safe high voltage), another BNC variant.

(MHV and BNC can be forced to mate, with some damage to the MHV resulting. SHV cannot be forced.)

Don't!
Those supplies from Acopian are factory-wired for either positive or negative output voltage:  the "P" prefix denotes positive.
See  Acopian link in my reply below.
They supply either the module, or the module mounted in a rack-mount housing with meters.
At the beginning of the instructions, note  "The high voltage output return, signal ground, programming ground and case ground are common and internally connected."

Oops.
Try  https://www.acopian.com/pdf/Acopian-High-Voltage-AC-DC-DC-DC-Modular-Rack-Mounting-Power-Supply.pdf

My "Don't" is mandatory:  the negative end of this supply is connected to the metal case and the various signal and control grounds.
It can be ordered with a negative output instead of the positive output that he has.
I edited my reply to delete the link to the downloaded file.
