Oscilloscope cap replacement - Panasonic vs Nichicon
« on: April 30, 2019, 08:54:04 am »
I got to replace a bunch of capacitors on the acquisition block of a portable digital oscilloscope and one of the requirements is to be small.

I am between Panasonic KS/KA series and Nichicon UMW. Can anyone advise which one suits better my application?

Panasonic KS/KA is a standard series. Nichicon UMW is an audio series.

I have a preference for Panasonic as I can buy locally.

It doesn't matter. Going by the data sheet. I'd go for the Panasonic, purely because it's a better data sheet.

No point paying any premium on 'Audio' rated caps.

As long as the Panasonic ones are genuine, they are a top-tier manufacturer and will work fine as long as the ESR etc is ok.
Where does all this test equipment keep coming from?!?

'Audio' rated caps  :palm:

You really don't care about the fidelity of the trace?  :o .... Oh wait, it's Digital.  ;D

'Audio' rated caps  :palm:

@Electro Detective,

If you can think about it, usually someone, somewhere, has already done it.

Space Grade Polymer Capacitors   :o
T583 series organic polymer devices address mission critical applications

We'll wait and see if these 'organic polymers' hold up better in space than the synthetics.

So this is what Kermit has been up to, to pay off the mortgage on the swampland.   :D

The AD converters may benefit, to smooth out those jagged edges
and expose any dishonest alias lurking in the works (  :palm: )

ok, this is my final attempt at light hearted -LOL- here:

Have they done 'Video rated' caps ?  :-//

"..videophool capacitors that won't let you down when you need them most,
during intense, full on action packed, knock down drag em out, pawn video playback"

A few years ago a bought a bunch of different panasonic caps without even knowing that some of them were "audio grade". Guess what, they seems to have a bit lower impedance (but they also have lower capacitance in the same volume). After I clean up my lab I can try to measure the difference with AD2. Stay tuned :)
