Find a replacement relay by pin spacing?
« on: June 23, 2023, 10:15:32 pm »
Hi all,  First post.

I want to identify a replacement SPDT relay based upon it's mechanical properties (pin spacing).  I don't find this as a search parameter at Newark.

How can I find a relay with the pin locations as shown in my attached sketch?  This will be a repair part for a 30 year old garage door opener.  There are no markings on the relay (no manufacturer, no PN, no logo, nothing).  Coil voltage is 24VDC.  Contacts need to control 1A at 120VAC.

That is a standard package relay. But nothing in a garage door opener is rated only 1A.
They are typically cube relays like Omron G5LE-1-DC24 or Song Chuan 833H-1C-C 24VDC sealed, I have not tried Songle as a cheap replacement.
I change all 3 - lights, motor fwd, rev. for the amount of hassle it is.

I have 0.6 inch between the pins along the long axis.  The relays you suggested have 0.5 inch on that dimension.  Is that "as close as I will find"?

Double check the measurement, I've never seen a longer relay in that form factor and with no markings or part number.

The measurement is correct.

Looks like a standard automotive footprint.

It's a longer cube relay with the extra 0.1" and that might be done for extra isolation voltage or current rating.
But sorry no luck at all finding one. Tried a search looking at the relay size such as overall length. It would have to be longer than the standard cube relay's 20-22.5mm.

TE Connectivity, they have bought out many old relay manufacturers and have the oddballs. But their website is a form of hell.

I'd just extend the coil pins on a standard cube relay it if can be done without creating a spacings/safety issue.

Finding a relay with specific pin spacing can be a bit tricky, especially for older equipment. I've faced similar issues with vintage electronics. One approach is to measure the exact pin spacing and search for "SPDT relay pin spacing" on other electronics component sites like Mouser or Digi-Key. They sometimes have more detailed search filters. As for the garage door opener, if you ever find yourself needing skilled help, there's a great service in Portland that I’ve heard good things about: https://portlanddoorsandlocksguy.com/. They might be able to offer some advice or even source parts for you.

The TE catalog is easy to understand.

For power relays:https://www.te.com/commerce/DocumentDelivery/DDEController?Action=srchrtrv&DocNm=1-1773969-4&DocType=DS&DocLang=English&DocFilename=ENG_DS_1-1773969-4_2002.pdf

In the case of relays, there is usually a "de facto standard" package.

I didn't see anything by TE in that catalogue that matches OP's oddball 0.6" spacing. Even the Schrack stuff (which is from Mars) they use their own distinct oddball package most of the time.
