Samsung DVD+VHS combo player read problem (DVD-VR355)

Just got this Samsung DVD-VR355. It doesn't read any discs the normal way.
The spindle motor spins erratically. It starts spinning properly when tapped in the center.
Once it starts spinning, then it works perfectly and will play both CDs and DVDs.
Could the spindle motor be bad or is there something wrong with the circuit?
Lubricating the motor didn't help.

The main board of the DVD player had signs of corrosion near and below the capacitors. Whatever it was, it cleaned off without a trace. Nevertheless, I changed the capacitors.
Still no difference.
