Philishave HS990 stopped charging
« on: February 15, 2021, 05:55:57 pm »
I opened up the shaver and found D3 diode is faulty - its acting as a resistor on my component tester. The problem is I can't find an equivalent its marked IR9538 and 95-5252. Has anyone heard of this diode?

I would replace it with a high speed Schottky rectifier. The 1C rating of the battery pack should give you a lower limit for the current.

The "IR" prefix would suggest International Rectifier, but I couldn't find any matching part.

Edit: I found this discontinuation notice:

https://media.digikey.com/pdf/PCNs/Vishay/DD-011-2013-Rev-0.pdf

The VS-95-5252 is a Schottky axial diode in a DO-15(DO-204AC) package. ("9538" is probably a YYWW date code)

The URL for the datasheet was ...

http://www.vishay.com/docs/88819/88819.pdf

The recommended alternative product is SB360S-E3.

SB360S, Vishay, Schottky Barrier Rectifier, 3A, 60V, DO-204AC (DO-15):
https://media.digikey.com/pdf/Data%20Sheets/Vishay%20Semiconductors/SB320S_thru_SB360S.pdf

"Base P/N-E3 - RoHS compliant, commercial grade"

hi, check also r2 and r20, they may be 'off', also C3 may be shorted, you must take him off for testing it

Thanks very much for your help in finding a replacement diode fzabkar.

Also thanks perieanuo I will check r2,r20 and C3.

R2 and R20 have burnt out - trouble is they are surface mounted and their values are illegible!

I do have another similar shaver but the board is different it has R100 and 1R00 resistors in a similar position. (It has a different IC - a surface mounted one).

Do those values sound reasonable? Would the different IC affect the values?

yes, 1R or 0r1 sounds ok, you can test with through-hole or smd one and see if it's getting hot, but be aware of the high potential of that voltage, don't touch without some insulated glove or after removing 220v and waiting the capacitors (c1, c2) to discharge

Do you know why they would have a 100 Ohm and a 1 Ohm resistor in parallel for R2 and R20?

Thanks

i'd guess they put two 1R or two 0R1 in parallel to respect the wattage, for me those two resistors are equal, in that place is no need to 'tune' some non-standard value by parallelilg 2 resistors, it's just current limiter not some fancy value
