Xbox 360 Elite, ICS1893BFLF replace/diagnose
« on: May 16, 2021, 10:56:05 pm »
Trying to fix an old Xbox 360 Elite that has a dead ICS1893BFLF network chip.
Died due to a lightning. No power adapters where attached though. Only ethernet cable to router.
Everything else seems to work as normal on the Xbox.

So, for me to have something to do i was thinking this might be a little project for me.
Chips can be bought from ebay quite cheap.

Also could be a good time to use my new Quick 957DW hot air station.

Anyone else done this?
Any recommended tools, heat, air flow speed etc?

Obviously i do not have any schematics for the Xbox. But i have at least the data sheet for the ICS1893BFLF chip with block diagrams and pins.
Here is the link for that data sheet: https://www.renesas.com/us/en/document/dst/1893bfbk-datasheet

I have not verified that the only thing that are might broken is the chip. There might be other components too.
But everyone tells me that the chip is dead. And are a common issue when lightning hits the box via ethernet.

How do i diagnose this chip without plugging the power in to the Xbox?
Pinout and other things are specified in the datasheet

Extensive testing without powering isn't the easiest. Usually an IC that has been hit too hard by over-voltage will have pins shorted to the ground or power supply lines internally, if there was also plenty of current available the IC may have fused internally giving open circuit pins or a hole in the top of the encapsulation.
I don't think this is a case where there's much to test, in any case for unpowered testing you'll want either an identical working PCB to compare measurements with or a spare IC to compare the desoldered supposedly dead one to.

As for other lightening havoc... you'll want to trace what the easiest path for the lightening was to reach the destroyed IC. Sometimes a little imagination and a close inspection of the PCB shows that the easiest path was taken by jumping gaps.

You might try checking out this YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/NorthridgeFix

He has a lot of videos on repairing game consoles and he doesn't spend the entire video ranting about Apple.

Does the Xbox still work, does it power on?

the chip is $4 for two on ebay, order and replace
you can start wondering what next when that doesnt work

Yeah, trust eBay sellers, once you've wondered enough why it still isn't working after all your efforts you'll be able to start questioning your new IC.  >:D

If the lighning overvoltage did really hit the chip, i would expect that the magnetics are also fried. But maybe only the magnetics are fried.

I do not know anything about the XBox, except that it is supposedly loosely based on Windows. Therefore i would expect that, when the actual chip is fried, that any and all network configuration on the box is impossible or will not be saved.

Iv seen my share of network cards deployed in neighborhood Lans that went deaf after a storm. Not dead, just wouldnt see any incoming packets, sending worked fine.

Schematics and boardview files can be found here..
https://xbox360hub.com/guides/
Its a Jasper V2 board also called Kronos

And the datasheet for the ICS1893BFLF can be found here..
https://www.renesas.com/us/en/document/dst/1893bfbk-datasheet

The ICS is still not replaced.. i have no rush with this :)

Yeah, it isnt easy to measure components while there in the circuit and also with no power plugged in.
It can be anything thats faulty. I can just replace the ICS and see if that made any changes.
I bought a couple of them.

I can use the Xbox normal except without the ethernet. Cant see/sense that its plugged in.
No LEDs on the switch either.

I know i can just get a used board or use a wireless adapter.. but that is no fun. No learning, no diagnosing and repairing with that :)
This stuff is one of my hobbies and intrests..

Please have a look at the Jasper/Kronos Allegro boardview file and/or the Jasper schematics
You can maybe provide some help after that
