Potentiometer/Switch for 1980s halogen lamp
« on: June 10, 2026, 03:18:42 pm »
The 80s were awesome, and 80s things were awesome.  I wasn't alive during the 80s, I don't think.

Witness this glorious lamp:

2837926-0

The poteniometer works but the switch doesn't on the pot/switch combo.  I'm wondering what the replacement part might be without taking it apart first.  For all I know I might even have the part!  These are ubiquitous, maybe someone knows!

Usually a stock carbon pot controlling a triac circuit, nothing special, you just need to find the right value. Some of those things had 300/500W linear halogen lamps and the switch needs to be line rated

Look, these 300W halogen lamps did start fires, curtains etc. can end up on the top and cook.
They are only good when painting a room lol, you can see every crack and imperfection.

The triac dimmer inside the pole, some had a seperate module on the floor. I have one that uses a diode for bright/dim lol.
It's a PITA to take apart because unthreading the pole badly twists the wires inside.

I thought the on-off switch (adjustable dimmer) just turned off the triac?
It might be a WH148 w/switch on a PCB. The WH138 is too big.

Also, these are not PE grounded fixtures so the potentiometer/switch/knob has a safety function and plastic shaft too.

Not even that as they're too unstable. The slightest bump and they tip over. Yep, I hate these lamps too.

But if you cut them in half (not too hard, as they're usually made out of two separate sections of tube) they become quite stable and make a decent worklamp for construction work when you mount 2 50W LED floodlights on it.

I probably have a few of those complete foot-switches (usually two switches and one dimmer) lying around in a box somewhere. They shouldn't be too hard to find in any 2nd-hand store in your vicinity.

BTW, is your ceiling so low or is that lamp extra tall? Either way, that lamp is too tall for the room.

I replaced that part on mine years ago.   Search for Zing Ear Torch Lamp Rotary Dimmer Switch.
