Power Generator voltage regulator repair.
« on: June 10, 2018, 09:23:37 pm »
Hi, I'm a newbie... and I'm not that smart.

I bought a second hand China made generator, "1000w digital inverter"
I paid approx 43$ for it, (400 Nok) It was listed as running, but it wasn't providing power last time it ran.

Ok, bought it sight unseen with the expectations that it could be a complete dud with regards to the power generation.
After I got my hands on it, I first got it running, and sure enough, no power outside of the +12v socket, but it's got it's own regulator and stator windings.
It became apparent that the prev owner had it apart and found the fault, and I found some disconnected wires and broken connectors...  >:(

Oh.. well, found the fault to be the main voltage regulator board.  This is potted, but one resistor was obviously burned out

It was open. I thought it may have been a resistor used as a fuse?

I cut it out of the board, and measured the same physical size resistor just above it. Hoping they where the same value :P hehe
It looked perfect when I measured it.  It looks damaged in the photo but that's because I tried to scrape off the epoxy. It measures 100 ohms in circuit.

Since I didn't have any 2w resistors, I thought I'd use two quarter watt 200 ohm resistors in parallel to get 100 ohms as a temp fix to see if it would output anything. Out of circuit they measure 100 ohm exactly, in circuit they measure just 50 ohm... Suggesting what?

Both resistors measure 33Megohms to the aluminum chassis.

My repair attempt:

Any ideas ? Should I just try it  as is ?

Hmm.... The good resistor is Red-Black Brown - Gold I think.

200 ohms... Ok

I tried putting four 200 ohm resistors in series parallel, but I got 63 ohm in circuit
I have no connectivity between the two leads if I disconnect 1 end of the resistors.

Well, probably the resistor is not the root cause. Most likely its in the potting and you are pretty much out of luck. But trying would be an idea, you cant ruin much i guess...

No juice, I need a new regulator board, and I can't find any...  |O

No, they are the most common failure on the Chinese genny's. At one point I had thought about designing a replacement, but at small volumes by the time you got it done it'd be more than the Generator.

I knew this going in, but I hoped I was able to get a replacement board... no deal...

This generator is a copy of the Kipor IG1000, same engine, engine controller/electronic carb ++ but the voltage regulator/controller board looks different, the connectors are inverse, and it only has 1 inductor vs two on my board.
