Power Designs 5015A Manual
« on: November 03, 2024, 03:34:14 pm »
I'm obsessed with these things. I love the design and build quality. I picked up 2 yesterday at a local hamfest. I snagged a 5015A and a 1010T. The 5015A works well. The case looks like bloody hell so I pulled the cover to spruce it up a bit. That's when I noticed 2 caps that had warts lol. I can't decipher the values and was hoping someone had a manual or schematic? I will upload a picture when I get back to the lab. Any help is appreciated.

Those caps are sleeved, I find foam cleaner works a treat and you can then read the values.

Spot on. A toothbrush and some IPA. Excellent advice. Thanks. I have added 3 pictures. They are both Sprague. Both electrolytic. I can’t decipher the values though.  Anyone?

First one is 20uF at 50V, second one 1100uF at 5V.

I’m reading 25.54uF @ .24ohms and 1638uF @ 0.08ohms. Thoughts? To me they drifted up but the ESR is fine.

Remember old capacitors have a much wider tolerance than modern ones, usually something like -20%, +50% or even +100%.
These days they have the processes perfected, to produce them nearer the bottom end of -10% tolerance, to minimise materials used & maximise profits.

Also note measurements on old stuff, should be taken after they have had a chance to reform and heat from soldering can temporarily affect the readings obtained.

Seconded.

I rather like my PD2020 :)

They have the advantages the transformer can be rewired for 240V operation, the LM399 reference, the mV accuracy, and the "pornographic" voltage selection dials.

Mine is the only one I've seen on sale at a tolerable price. I wonder why they don't come up for sale often ;)

I’m up to 4 now. My wife is going to divorce me soon. One of the 2 I just bought doesn’t work at all. Should be fun to fix. It’s a 1010T if anyone has that manual or schematic?

That's a tricky, nuanced decision :)

Fix one, flog it for more than you paid; might enlighten your other decision :)

Never fear, we're here to help, e.g. https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/test-equipment-anonymous-(tea)-group-therapy-thread/

A free pdf manual for the 5015A, from the pile of manuals from "manualsplus" that were rescued & scanned after they closed and added to the web archive; https://archive.org/details/manualsplus_03264/mode/1up

Thank you. I was able to get the manual from a previous response but both of these manual downloads only contain 7 pages. I suspect whatever is missing is what’s needed to adjust the unit. I appreciate your help and feedback.

Does it actually need adjustment?

As others can now find the manual/circuit, the rest can be worked out.

The panel meter is adjusted with R22, the others might set the maximum current (R31) and maximum voltage (R19) available, maybe others can confirm?
If it's out of adjustment & no-one else replies and you want to find out yourself, mark the settings of the adjustors (so you can return them to the previous position), move them a little & you should figure it out.

Here is the manual for the 5015T - should be close enough to help out.
