rc-unit exploded inside a Danica power supply
« on: May 15, 2021, 04:00:26 pm »
I have a rather old power supply made by Danica Elektronik, Denmark. Today it exploded and caught fire.

There is a component on top of the transformer with the text RC-UNIT PMR 2026 marked on it. On the side it has 0.25 uF and 22 Ohm. Also it says C 7432.

As far as I have been able to tell you can't get this component anymore.

Can I just substitute with a capacitor and resistor in series with the correct values or is there a reason this is a combined component?

A nice example or Rifa metallised paper capacitor plague (forum search for Rifa will give you the idea ;)). Luckily it doesn't appear to have done much damage, you might want to re-terminate the mains lead though.

In this case, as you say, it is an RC snubber. The capacitor needs to be Class-X rated for safety. You can purchase suitable encapsulated RC snubber cheaply from most electronics distributors. Most use Polypropylene capacitors.
Best Regards, Chris

If it's directly across the mains (i.e. not connected to just the transformer as would be the case for a ferroresonant transformer), just use a X2 capacitor without a resistor.
