Hi,

I have an FSP38 (1164.4391.38) that runs Windows XP.  However, when I turn it on, it now displays this error message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINTNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

Can somebody please help me figure out how to fix the OS on the analyzer?  Is there a doc on how to restore the OS (perhaps via USB, or LAN or GPIB, or RS232 etc.)

Thanks a lot!

Sounds like it can't find the windows registry, which is probably due to disk corruption.
First thing i would do is take an image of the entire disk.  If it has corruption issues you want to take an image before they get worse.
Do you know what sort of disk it uses?  CF / IDE etc..

This might help for trying to recover from the error.

Most of the R&S instruments I've worked on have a recovery mode from a bootloader that shows up for just a few seconds after the bios shows.  All you have to do is put an input in with a keyboard and you should be able to recover the firmware from an image just like that.

If you contact R&S support, they may be able to provide a recovery image as well - I've asked and gotten one for a different instrument before.

The hard disk is a Toshiba 1GB IDE drive (see that in the BIOS.) Thanks for the link - will check it out.

I tried pressing F8 during the boot time and got the various boot options, including one that said "Analyzer Firmware" - tried this, but then got the same error again.

R&S FSP quick start (https://cdn.rohde-schwarz.com/pws/dl_downloads/dl_common_library/dl_manuals/gb_1/f/fsp_1/FSP_KHB_en.pdf)  guide says that I should see an "Analyzer Firmware Backup" option, but I don't see that.  Only see "Analyzer Firmware" option.

Thanks for your suggestion.  I have also sent a message to R&S to ask for help.
