Hi all,
I was donated a Panasonic AG-MD835 S-VHS VCR that has not been used for ten years at least and only has about thirty hours of drum use. On arrival, the unit was dead but was so because it was in a shutdown mode caused by a jammed mechanism. The tape transport and mechanism have been cleaned and made working again after realignment. Playback of pre-recorded tapes (i.e. tapes recorded on other VCRs) that are known to be in good condition shows small amounts of dropouts and bearding during luminance transitions e.g. black to white horizontally. Recordings made by the unit itself show more severe bearding on playback, almost enough to cause loss of sync. For both pre-recorded and self-recorded tapes, the picture would have flickering brightened white stripes fully across the screen and upon imagery with very high detail, the picture dims slightly.
The rotary drum is clean and has no physical damage. There are no visual signs of capacitor failure, however there are surface mount electrolytics (SMEs) on the video and audio processing PCBs.
I do electronics repairs part-time but this unit is the first unit for me to deal with SMEs. Can some light be shed on this repair please? Thanks in advance.
