replacement GPIB standoffs
« on: December 30, 2015, 11:56:23 am »
Hi,

Anyone any idea where to get replacement GPIB standoffs i.e. the male/female ones that screw into the socket and then the GPIB plug screws into them. Yes, I broke one - like serial sockets, undoing the plug often nets you the standoff out of the socket as well, and I was attempting to put the standoff back fairly tight. eBay and Aliexpress are not much help with this one. They are apparently an:

M3.5 Socket with a 6-32 Screw (!)

I can't think why we don't use that idea anymore. The ones I'm looking for are:

M3.5 x 0.6 thread / 15mm total length / with 5mm head plus a 3mm shoulder plus a 7mm thread

Any thoughts or clues welcome? I'm in the UK if it makes a difference.

Regards, Alan

I made a few GPIB connectors from the normal centronics-like connector. I just used M3 bolts and got a M3.5 thread cutter from eBay and cut the M3.5 thread over the existing M3 thread. The bolts were 10 mm length afair and needed some filing down to allow the connector to fully fit in. Because of how the normal thread cutters work it isn't possible to tighten the screw all the way in, but it's deep enough.

Thanks that's a pretty workable idea - and I think there are some thread cutters that go all the way to the bottom :) Checking I see that M3.5  is a 0.6mm thread and M3 a 0.5 but I guess it's not critical.
